As more companies adopt the practice of putting their developers on call, their developers must also learn how to use a myriad of new tools and understand a new paradigm to operate their own services and applications. What makes this process so difficult? What challenges stand in the way of a small team trying to level up the operational knowledge of the rest of an engineering organization? Why is good observability so hard to achieve?

Switching from a non-technical role to a technical role without the college degree or internship experience typically associated with it can be a daunting task. This talk will illuminate the paths taken by the two speakers as they navigated their own transitions into technical roles, and will share some of the lessons they learned along the way.
